Kalamazoo, MI-- On Saturday, February 7, 2009, The All Ears Theatre 2009 season presents “Lost in Kazoo” (written and directed by Dr. Von Washington, Sr). In this production a young boy named Carlton James moves to the nearby city of Kalamazoo, where he meets a young girl who tells him that in order to succeed at school he must know his family history and culture or be considered a “lost child”. The program showcases Carlton’s frustrations in his quest to discover himself.

Set in the 1950s, this story features the protagonist Jesse, a young boy in Alabama who learns that his brother will be expelled from school for misplacing his book. When Jesse discovers that the white kids will receive new books depicting places around the world, he believes he should also have the opportunity to read them. In the meantime, Jesse’s parents decide to move north so their children can attend better schools. Despite their relocation, Jesse still faces many obstacles before he’s able to visit the library—the refuge where he can find the books that allow him to escape into the faraway lands of his dreams.

Set in the 1950s, this story features the protagonist Jesse, a young boy in Alabama who learns that his brother will be expelled from school for misplacing his book. When Jesse discovers that the white kids will receive new books depicting places around the world, he believes he should also have the opportunity to read them. In the meantime, Jesse’s parents decide to move north so their children can attend better schools. Despite their relocation, Jesse still faces many obstacles before he’s able to visit the library—the refuge where he can find the books that allow him to escape into the faraway lands of his dreams.

Written and directed by Von Washington Sr., "The Long Ride Home" tells the story of a young boy named Sanko who sets out to solve a mystery after accepting a schoolyard challenge. With the help of his friend Kiki, Sanko attempts to find out what happened to Peter Van Wagener, Sojourner Truth’s only son, who mysteriously vanished on-board a whaling boat in 1839. After seeking advice from Uncle Carlos, Sanko discovers he must use his imagination to discover the truth behind Peter’s unexplained disappearance.
“’The Long Ride Home’ is a story that bridges the gap from the past and the present,” says Washington. “It is an attempt to use some of the unfinished stories from the past that have not been brought up in American history and bring them in attention to modern day audience.”

Once she locates the home, she challenges Sanko to help her bring an end to Moosha’s tragic history.

Hoffman’s classic Christmas tale with new focus on its heroine, here called Marie Claire, and her efforts to transform her beloved Nutcracker back into a handsome young man. The sometimes sinister but ultimately benevolent Godfather Drosselmaier serves as narrator and stage-manager. Marie Claire becomes much more involved in the action than in any other version of “Nutcracker,” playing a vital role in the tale’s resolution and fully embodying its themes of love, loss, sacrifice, and transformation. Translated and adapted for radio by and Deborah Ann Percy and Arnold Johnston.

This is Bryan Zocher's play about Melvin, a somewhat nontraditional super hero.
Melvin grew up under the shadow (literally in a Cold War backyard bunker) of his famous relative, Superman. During his stay in the bunker, Melvin got news of the world through a radio badly in need of repair. This bad radio connection caused Melvin to hear former President Richard Nixon proclaim, “I am a crook.” Whereas his kin Superman can leap a tall building in a single bound, Super Duper Man can levitate six feet in the air for five second spurts. Melvin escapes the backyard bunker on the day the Berlin Wall goes down and the adventures begin.
